I remember the years I spent defending the notion that the United States was founded as a Christian nation, especially during my time with New Jersey League of American Families and the Constitution Party. I relied heavily on the works of WallBuilders' David Barton, American Vision's Gary DeMar, and Chalcedon's R.J. Rushdoony. It wasn't long, though, before I stumbled on the works of Dr. Gary North. He's a Christian Reconstructionist--so no one can fault him for opposing theocracy--but he differed from the likes of Barton, DeMar and Rushdoony in so far as he insists that the federal founding of the United States was a kind of secular coup d'etat. His position, which I have yet to see refuted, is that the federalists were largely influenced by the philosophies of Freemasonry and the Scottish Enlightenment, as well as the theology of Isaac Newton and John Witherspoon. North goes into great detail about the Christian settlers, their ruling documents, the colonial constitutions, the shift in academia and law regarding covenants and constitutions, and the way that the federalists handled the convention, making it practically impossible for the devout, orthodox Protestants (most of whom were Anti-Federalists) from attending. He also spends a great deal of time discussing the significance of the "no religious test" clause in Article VI, Section 3 of the Constitution--comparing that with state constitutions and the Articles of Confederation. It's a very, very deep book, and it's one that I encourage anyone interested in this issue to read. In my opinion, it answers "Was American founded as a Christian nation?" with a definitive "no!"

Here are some PDF links:

Conspiracy in Philadelphia: The Origin of the United States Constitution
http://www.garynorth.com/philadelphia.pdf

Political Polytheism: Appendix B: Rushdoony on the Constitution: pg. 675
http://www.garynorth.com/freebooks/docs/pdf/political_polytheism.pdf

Appendix B is a criticism of R.J. Rushdoony, one of the most intellectual and influential peddlers of the "Christian Nation Myth." Rushdoony also happened to be his father-in-law.

PS - Dilyn Corner of PaleoRadio bought this book in hardcover after seeing it at my home and hearing of its content. As I said, North is a theocrat hoping to reconstruct America as a truly Christian nation with a political economy rooted in the bible--including the Old Testament case laws--so his criticism of the Christian nation myth is all the more difficult for Christian revisionists to cast aside.

I actually had considered the tax purpose angle to same sex marriage. My wife has told me that if I ever die before her, she'd not remarry. But, she did say that if she could join with her best friend to live out her life and to share expenses, she would. This wouldn't be a sexual union but a survvival union. As a couple though, my wife and her friend would get benefits if they were married.
